MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital / Charleston, SC

In 2018, the Medical University of South Carolina’s Curator and Art Collections Manager, Roberta Sokolitz, reached out to Duckworth in reference to the 2019 opening of the Shawn A. Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion. This $389 Million state-of-the-art building will transform how care is delivered to children and women, seamlessly integrating children’s care with obstetrical services. As MUSC President Dr. David Cole put it, “This is not an MUSC-Charleston thing. This is providing care for the state.”

Duckworth’s team is very grateful to be a part of such a meaningful and necessary project. Since the beginning of 2018, John joined the Art Committee at MUSC as a decorative glass project manager and worked alongside Perkins+Will’s incredible team: Senior Project Designer, Aiko Tanabe, Principal Interior Designer, Carolyn Baross, and Principal Architect, Jeff Tyner. While the PW’s team was reviewing designs in New York, Duckworth’s team was working with the architects in South Carolina. Together they supervised the entire process of the decorative glass production - this included glass samples being digitally made, printed, shipped, and reviewed several times before being approved.

John’s artwork can be seen in the main lobby and E.R. Lobby. Each landscape was shot exclusively for MUSC in the style of his Landscape Abstract series with a calming yet brilliant green/blue color scheme in mind. These were then printed on vellum and sandwiched between two panes of glass and mechanically installed.

One large landscape, 26 wide by 23 tall, is along the main stairwell divided into 12 glass panels each at 12 ft tall. Another large landscape dominates the E.R. stairwell creating a fresh, optimistic scene in what is typically a stressful environment. Sprinkled throughout the hospital are cropped skylines from John’s landscapes that provide an inviting backdrop to the three main information desks.

Thanks to MUSC Chief, Dr. Mark Scheurer, Roberta Sokolitz, the Perkins+Will team (listed above), MUSC Senior Project Manager John Sion, Brian Vena of Robins & Morton Construction, the MUSC Art Committee, McGrory Glass, Glasscorp, and Duckworth’s team: Tabitha Thurber, Austin Schulz, and Andrew King

“Projects like this come around once in a lifetime if you’re lucky - the perfect combination of people and place.”

Charleston GI / Charleston, SC

Duckworth and his team worked directly with Samantha Meinders of Stubbs Muldrow Herin architects to orchestrate an art collection package for Charleston GI. This collection features over 70 pieces of artwork for both the medical and corporate wings of the building. Aiming for a serene atmosphere, they handpicked marsh-scapes from both the Landscape Abstract and the Panorama series as well as some vibrant Myopics for the doctors’ personal offices.

To create a cohesive vision, Duckworth broke the space up into locations. Each location was then color-coded and digitally mocked up to maintain continuity between color, content, and scale. Multiple mediums and methods of execution were used to fit the context of the location. For example, the patient room’s artwork was printed to canvas, mounted to 1/2” panels, and hung higher to ensure maximum durability, protection, and ease of cleaning. The wall coverings were also placed in high-traffic areas and were printed on an OSHA-approved fireproof interior substrate.

Utilizing different elements from wall coverings, plexiglass, canvas, and paper allowed for the cost to fit within the budget and collaborate with friends at Red Falcon Ink who created and installed the wall coverings and Baboo Digital for the plexiglass pieces.

The result was a real home run.

“It’s so amazing when a group’s synergy comes together like this - it was a perfect collaboration. Samantha Meinders from SMHA and Charleston GI owners, Wanda and Tommy Punteney, were excellent to work with. It was a dream project that resulted in a beautiful retrospective of my artwork within an impeccably designed space.”

Schonfeld / New York, NY

In 2015, Duckworth gained Schonfeld Strategic Advisors LLC, Steven Schonfeld’s $20 billion global investment firm, as a client. The opportunity arose when Andrew Fishman, CEO of Schonfeld, approached Carol Romanoff of Romanoff Elements to outfit the Manhattan office with artwork that highlighted New York City.

Carol naturally thought of Duckworth’s Urban Journey series of abstract photography work that captures the dynamic pulse of metropolitan scenes with a soft dreamlike impression.

The collaboration started on one floor of the 5th Avenue office with artwork in the lobby, boardrooms, and hallways. As the firm has grown, the collection has now expanded to two more floors that also exude that quintessential New York perspective.

“Carol and I worked closely together on this project, scouting each floor in advance to determine the setting and orientation. I then spent many hours walking the streets of Manhattan looking for the best angle and lighting conditions for each image. It’s so nice being involved early in the design process to have plenty of time to custom create the perfect piece of artwork for each location.”

Time Place Wine Co. / Sold Nationally

In 2018, Duckworth was approached by Advintage Distributing owner, Henri Gabriel, about a new sustainable wine collection he was starting with Jamey Whetstone of Whetstone Wine Cellars in Lodi, CA. This fruitful partnership produced Time Place Wine Co. Duckworth’s team supervised the label design as well as provided images from the Landscape Abstract series for six of the varietals: cinsault, zinfandel, grenache, mourvedre, picpoul, and rosé.

Coincidentally, Jamey was born and raised in South Carolina and moved to California to pursue his winemaking dreams while John was born and raised in California and ended up in South Carolina making artwork.

“Henri had a vision and knows how to pull together the right team to ensure that the result is greater than the sum of its parts. I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed this project. The bottle designs are beautiful, and the wine is fantastic. Henri has such a contagious enthusiasm for life and it is a real honor and privilege to now count him as a friend. I don’t take that for granted, I’m a lucky man.”
